David Jones of Ohio had an unusual approach to proposing marriage to his girlfriend last week. He bought some air time on local channel and told her to look for him posing as a superhero for a noon commercial spot on WJW-TV. His girlfriend, Dee Horton a hair stylist was at work when the spot aired.
She had no idea what was about to happen as the spot began only that he was supposed to be superhero. “[He’s] suppose to be some superhero in it,” she said before it aired.

A billboard for a Minneapolis museum has been replaced, after someone spray-painted clothing and the word “Brrr!” in red over its depiction of a nude, 16th-century Venus painting.
The advertisement is for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ exhibition of works by the Italian master Titian. The museum chose to feature the famous “Venus Rising from the Sea” painting on the ad because “it’s very typical of paintings in the show,” said MIA spokeswoman Anne-Marie Wagener.

Anyone familiar with Captain Morgan knows of his famous one-legged stance. On Wednesday, the Captain and his Morganettes invited a whole arena full of basketball fans to join them in a world record attempt for Most People Standing on One Leg Simultaneously. Did they get it? Of course they did!

A month after Blair Griffith won the Miss Colorado USA pageant last October, the 23-year-old beauty and her ailing mother were left homeless after sheriff officers evicted them from their Denver-area home.
“Anyone can fall victim to this with the situation that’s going on in today’s economy,” Griffith told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira this morning (video below). “It was terrible. When you go through the eviction process, they basically come in and throw all your belongings into trash bags and you have no idea where anything is. It’s very difficult.”

Next week will mark Theodor Geisel’s 107th birthday. Geisel’s pen name was Dr. Seuss, author of many children’s books. He wrote 60 to be exact, among them Green Eggs and Ham, The Sneetches and other Stories, and Fox in Socks.
Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts to German immigrants. He studied at Dartmouth and was caught violating the prohibition laws by drinking gin with friends. He was kicked off the college paper by the Dean. Yet he wanted to keep writing for the paper, so he started using the pen name Seuss.

Every one of the 1,926 teachers working for the Providence, Rhode Island School Department was sent a dismissal notice this week, in a move officials say was necessary to deal with a projected deficit of almost $40 million next year.
According The Providence Journal, “School and city leaders said they were forced to issue the mass dismissal notices because of a state law that says teachers must be notified about possible layoffs or terminations by March 1.” Ouch! In a statement, Mayor Angel Taveras said that because the deadline for the layoff notifications comes before the budget for next year could be determined, the move was necessary.
