Some people have boatloads of cash, but Australian billionaire Clive Palmer (above) plans to turn his boatload into an actual ship – The Titanic II. Palmer announced today that he plans to build a replica of the Titanic, the famous ocean liner than sank in 1912.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement.

After 15 years away from the big screen, James Cameron’s Titanic returns to theatres tomorrow, this time in 3D. Naturally, you might have forgotten a great deal about the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet so here’s a very brief and very hilarious reminder.

A unique collection of Titanic memorabilia, including a note from bandleader Wallace Hartley, will soon be up for grabs at an auction commemorating the 100th anniversary of The Titanic’s sinking.

“I see documents and handwritten letters every day and that one just blows me away,” said Bobby Livingston, vice president of RRAuction. “It’s amazing to have the last letter home from the guy in the band that played on.”

As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking approaches, National Geographic has released striking, never-before-seen images of the doomed ship.

The images, which appear in the April edition of National Geographic magazine, show the Titanic as it rests on the ocean floor today. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution took the HD images in 2010 using state-of-the-art robotic vehicles. The vehicles snapped hundreds of photos per second and then stitched the images together to make large HD photos. The results, as you can see on the magazine’s website, are fascinating.

After the release of James Cameron’s hit 1997 film, Titanic, the theme song “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion would be forever tied to the images of the sinking ship. So, the fact that that particular song, tied to the story of love and death, would be playing in a restaurant on the Costa Concordia as the ship began to sink is beyond ironic. It’s downright unsettling! And, it’s not the only creepy similarity between the two tragic accidents.
