Okay, so Harold Camping’s Judgment Day prediction didn’t exactly pan out, but the end is totally coming for real this time. To make a long story short, the 13th Bak’tun (400-year cycle) on the ancient Mayan calendar draws to a close on December 21, 2012, and this spells the end for us all. When Animal Planet aired their faux documentary Mermaids: The Body Found, the internet lit up with rumors that the mythical sea creatures were, in fact, real. NOAA, with is the US government's national weather service, had to issue a statement on their website debunking the show, reading, in part " No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."

The episode re-aired on the 17th, sending mermaids back into Google searches top trends. If you fell for the documentary hoax, you are hardly alone. Since the Renaissance era, tricksters, frauds, and those who just wanted to engage in a little wish-fulfillment have created fake mermaid tales. A few of the notable ones:

Though there’s never a wrong time to honor the men and women who serve our country, summer is particularly meaningful, thanks to Memorial Day and the 4th of July. In that spirit, MyDot would like to pay tribute to Private First Class (PFC) Len Lathan, one of the first African American men to serve in the U.S. Marines Corps.

Lathan, who will soon be 86, was one of the original Montford Point Marines, a group of black men who integrated the Marines between 1942 and 1949. Late last year, Congress unanimously voted to honor the brave men who often faced racist treatment from officers and fellow Marines.

"They paved the way for all the other African-Americans coming into the Marine Corps. They made the sacrifice," Louise Greggs, co-operator of Jacksonville’s Montford Point Marine Museum told The Fayetteville Observer. "They thought nothing of it. They had no way of knowing they were making history. They just wanted to be Marines."

When one thinks of extroverted cities, places like Los Angeles or New York probably come to mind. After all, both cities attract aspiring models and actors by the thousands. However, according to one recent study, the tiny town of Keota, Iowa (pop. 1,009) is the most extroverted city in the nation. Say what?
