October is the month for making, and breaking, pumpkin world records. Here are a few records as cited in the newly-released 2012 Guinness World Records.
Heaviest Pumpkin
Last year, Chris Stevens of New Richmond, WI presented a 1,810 lb 8 oz pumpkin (above) at the Stillwater Harvest Fest in Stillwater, MN, setting a new world record for heaviest pumpkin. The previous record holder weighed in at 1,725 lbs.
Largest Pumpkin Pie
As for pumpkin pies (one of the most delicious foods on the planet), the heaviest pie measured 12 ft, 1 in and weighed in at 2,020 lbs. The New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio created this culinary masterpiece on October 8, 2005.
Fastest Pumpkin Carver
David Finkle is the fastest pumpkin carver on record. On October 7, 2010, the UK man carved a face into a pumpkin in just 20.1 seconds!
Farthest Distance to Fire a Pumpkin
Ralph J. Eschborn II, Alex C. Eschborn, Eric J. Eschborn, Pete Hill, Stefan Hill, John Piel, Verne Weidman, Don Brill, and Harry Harding set a new record for pumpkin chunkin’ last year after they hurled a pumpkin 5,545.43 ft with their "Big 10 Inch" air cannon. The American team set the record on September 9, 2010.
Most Lit Pumpkins
On October 21, 2006, the Life is Good company teamed up with Camp Sunshine, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, to set the world record for most lit pumpkins. The team simultaneously lit 30,128 jack-o’-lanterns in Boston Common.
