With the rise of social networking sites, comes the rise of annoying updates. Here are five updates to avoid on MyDot.com.
The Quote Update
Though they’re meant to be inspirational, the quote update is usually more annoying than feel good. Does everyone really need a reminder about the virtues of a “strong woman,” or the benefits of a “real man”? While an inspirational quote or two is fine, posting quote after girl power quote (sorry ladies, but you do this more than guys) may cause your friends to tune you out.
The Vague Update
The vague update is melancholy and mysterious - “I just can’t do this anymore,” “Everything happens for a reason,” or “I’m scared and confused” are just a few examples. If your post is intended to get friends to ask what’s wrong or offer support, then you’re definitely guilty of vague updating.
The Passive Aggressive Update
Closely related to the vague update, the passive aggressive update is aimed at a specific person but is posted for the world to see. “I’m lost with you,” and “I’m sick of dropping everything for people who won’t do the same for me,” are just two examples. If you have something to say to somebody, why not say it to them directly?
The “Vote for My Kid” Update
If you’re friends with many parents, you’re bound to have come across the “vote for my kid” guy or gal, usually gal. This person enters their child in every cute kid contest across the land and wants you to vote for their offspring again and again. Are you guilty of pestering your friends for votes? While it’s fine to solicit help, do it sparingly and/or save it for the big contests.
The Politics Update
Politics is a volatile subject and even the most innocuous of political posts can set off a slew of heated comments. If you don’t want your friends, family, or other followers coming to virtual blows than stay away from political updates. Religious posts are also risky.
