When Barry Chappell quit smoking cigarettes, he didn't expect to pick up a new, more unusual addiction. After six years and with over 95,000 pieces of Nicorette gum, Barry built the World's Largest Medicated Gumball.

"What started out as kind of a joke between my daughter and me has turned into a really fun project over the last few years," he told Ripley's Believe It or Not, who is acquiring Barry's big ball to display at one of their museums.

Weighing in at 175 pounds and measuring 62” in circumference, the gumball was created with the use of a sauna, a spray water bottle, and a hairdryer. Barry would collect his chewed up pieces of gum and place them inside his sauna. As they would heat up, he would spray them down with water to keep them malleable. He would start sticking the slightly melted gum onto the ball, while using a hairdryer to keep it all warm and pliable.

This fun little hobby certainly wasn't cheap. Barry had to spend over $30,000 on the Nicorette gum! Perhaps this was just a clever marketing scheme by the smoking cessation company. Now that Barry's gumball belongs to Ripley's, I wonder if he'll pick up another record-setting obsession.
