If you were planning a visit to Furuvik Zoo in Sweden you may want to stay away from the chimpanzee exhibit. Santino the chimpanzee has been displaying some incredibly intelligent behavior; unfortunately the zoo’s guests have been suffering for it.
Santino has been using some forethought to plot out attacks against visitors in order to increase his success rate. He’s been in the news before for launching rocks and other projectiles at the crowd, but now he’s got an efficient system down! Now, he pulls out a heap of hay to hide his projectiles under after guests walk away. Rather than appearing angry and aggressive, he pretends to be perfectly content and then begins throwing these stones at the guests, catching them entirely by surprise!
“What is interesting is that he made these preparations when the visitors were out of sight, and also that he incorporated innovations into the behavior,” said Mathias Osvath, the lead author of a new study on the chimpanzee. “…What makes this a bit special is that he actually had not experienced before what he seemed to anticipate. He, in a sense, produced a future outcome instead of just preparing for a scenario that had previously been re-occurring reliably.”
Despite how awesome this is for science, Santino was punished for his intelligence. The poor chimp was castrated when he initially decided to start throwing things at visitors. Apparently he has nothing left to lose now!
