In San Jose, California, drivers are caught off guard when they see Salvatore La Barbera selling hot dogs on the side of the road. That's because he rolls up in a big, black hearse and cooks the dogs inside of a coffin!
"Some people take a dim view of this because of the controversy of mixing food and death," La Barbera said. "But I've had a lot more people stop me just to take a picture."
Salvatore, a self-described car lover, won an online auction for the hearse but what he didn't know is that it came complete with a coffin! Knowing food trucks are all the rage, he transformed the coffin into his own, patented hot dog steamer and named the business Dead Dogs, Ltd: Bite Me!
He has a few hot dog hearses in San Jose and a few operating in Hawaii. He hopes to start offering franchise opportunities soon as he's already opened a factory to convert metal coffins into his patented steamers.
"I wanted this to be lighthearted," Sal said. "But once the novelty goes over, and people laugh, I want the food quality to be tops."
