Happy belated birthday, internet! We would totally have sent an e-card if we'd thought to check our online calendar yesterday.
On August 6th, 1991, the first webpage was published by Tim Berners-Lee of CERN. (You can still see it here.) While some of the concepts behind the Internet had been brewing since the 1960s, 1991 was the first time a publicly accessible page was created. The page talked about what the internet was, and invited readers to contribute to it and make it larger.
And, add to it they did. Last year, Time Magazine estimated that 7 million DVDs worth of data is transferred online every hour. And, by 2015, 966 exabytes of data will be consumed on the 'net every year.
We hope that the internet celebrates this massive mile stone by going out, IMing many of its friends while drunk, and posting many embarassing pictures on itself.
