Are you hoping your child will grow up to be a successful business person? Dreaming that they will become a professional athlete? Well then you may want to choose your child’s name wisely.

According to LinkedIn, the online professional networking site, the top names for CEOs are Peter or Deborah, while the top names for athletes are Ryan, Matt, or Jessica.

LinkedIn, looking at their pool of over 100 million profiles, released a list of the most popular names across many different professions and cultures. For example, female engineers in the U.S. will likely be named Kiran, and Thierry is the most common name in the food service industry worldwide.

Of course names do not determine what we will do for the rest of our lives, but our names can determine certain traits. For instance, boys with names that are too girly struggle from higher rates of behavior problems; also, the “race” of your name can influence how people treat you. In 2003 the National Bureau of Economic Research published a study that showed people who sent out resumes with more “white-sounding” names got 30 percent more callbacks than the exact same resumes sent out under “African American-sounding” names.

LinkedIn also found an interesting anomaly. Male CEOs and sales professionals in the U.S. tend to use the shorter versions of their names, such as Jack or Tom. A professor at the University of Louisville, and part of the research team, Frank Nuessel, surmised in a statement that “It’s possible that sales professionals in the U.S. and male CEOs around the world use these shortened versions of their name as a way to be more approachable and accessible to potential clients.”

On the flip side, female CEOs showed the opposite of this, using their formal names. “Interestingly enough, female CEOs appear to prefer to use their full names and not nicknames, which could signify that they want to be taken more seriously and want co-workers to think of them in a more professional light,” said Nuessel.
